About this site
Name:
Terra Incognita has been established on 30 October 2007.
For the first week it bore a name of its author - Katarzyna Skonieczna.
Then I decided to give it a more symbolic name, which would be descriptive and metaphorical at the same time.
Terra incognita is the Latin term for “unknown land”, used in cartography for regions that have not been mapped or documented.
A legend claims that cartographers labelled such regions with “Here are dragons” (”hic sunt dracones“).
During the 19th century terra incognita disappeared from maps, since both the coastlines and the inner parts of the continents had been fully explored.
But there are many of the unknown-s to be encountered in our life, with dragons to be fight off and with unforgettable discoveries to be made.
My unknown land - to which this site is devoted is primary a world of fine art I’m hoping to explore and to master.
Like an ancient cartographer I’ve been mapping and documenting anything that came into my view and caught my attention.
I’ve been also making my own contributions to the land, by inventing my own images and my own language to communicate them.
This space is just a natural expansion of that process of familiarizing and understanding the unknown.
Policy:
- This web-page presents private opinions, thoughts and works of its author. If a thought/ an image doesn’t belong to me I try to make it clear either by quotations marks or by naming my source directly. If you think that any content of this page hasn’t been credited as it should be - please let me know about this.
- I’m not an expert, not an academic - at this moment (2007) I’m a second year student of art so, most probably, I’m not free from mistakes, misunderstandings and simplifications. Therefore a critical reading is strongly encouraged. I will be grateful for any inaccuracy or misconception spotted.
- I’m a contributor to the David’s Rourke All the Strange Hours (www.rourkevisualart.com) and some of the posts appear on both blogs. This is a cross-posting which has been agreed by both sides. However, any other, unauthorised by me sharing of the original contents of this site (texts/images of my work etc.) is not encouraged.
- This site is meant to be public, so the comments (any sort - you don’t have to be nice) are invited. You can send me an e-mail (kaskon@gmail.com) if you don’t want to ask or express your thoughts on the blog.
- Comments that are abusive, off topic, use expressions commonly recognized as rude, insulting, profane and disrespectful will be deleted.
- Spam comments are not allowed.
- As English is not a mother-tongue of the author the corrections will be made, serious modifications of the posts (or parts of it) will be listed at the end of the text. Please, let me know if you think I should correct/make more clear any written part of this blog.
- I use British English, please take it into your account if you are a reader from the U.S or any other part of the world (there are some significant and minor differences in vocabulary, spelling and grammar)
- English is the first language of the blog because it’s the most popular code of communication in the Western World, but - in exceptional cases - I will accept comments in Polish, Russian and French.
- Please, let me know should you have any problems with accessing or/and understanding this site or any parts of this site.
